With competency-based training at Advance Driver Training, you can progress through the licence stages quicker than normal, provided you have the necessary skills, competence and confidence. Lessons are available at any stage. Remember that your motorcycle must be on the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) approved list for the duration of your 6L and 6R licences. Compulsory Basic Handling Course
Competency Based Testing - 6R
Competency Based Testing - 6F
This is the first stage in the licensing process, for you to demonstrate your riding ability and confidence in a safe location with other riders, but no other vehicle traffic.
There is a lesson as part of this 2 hr handling course to prepare for the test. Available in Timaru or Ashburton subject to numbers (2-4 riders).
Upon completing this successfully, you are given a certificate to allow you to take your theory test at an approved test centre.
Bike hire is included. Allow 2 hrs.

There is NO minimum time required to wait before you can move to the 6R stage, provided you are competent to complete it.
This is a 60 min on-road test, where you are directed around a pre-approved test route by the approved examiner, using in-helmet comms gear to provide route directions.
We're checking your riding style and safety against a range of parameters to ensure you are riding to approved standards.
Subject to completing this successfully, you are given a certificate to take to an approved licensing agency to get your 6R licence.

There is a 9-12 month wait before you can take your 6F test. Essentially, you can take the 6F test anytime after 9 months, but are unable to convert your licence until after 12 months! Sounds odd? That's the way it is!
This is a 30 min on-road test, where you are directed around a pre-approved test route by the approved examiner using in-helmet comms gear to provide route directions.
We're checking your riding style and safety against a range of parameters to ensure you are riding to approved standards. Fewer errors are permitted compared to the longer 6R test.
